A couple is addicted. Zack and Sam are discontented with one another. Unbeknownst to the other, they have the same complaint: they're on their phones too much and not present with each other when they're together. Their attention is on their devices, not each other, and their connection is suffering. Then Zack has an idea from his co-worker, who observes the sabbath. Zack proposes that he and Sam stay off their phones. However, disconnecting from their devices is a challenging process, bringing out the worst in each other and their relationship. Directed and written by Max Nowick, this short romantic drama is an acerbic, bitingly witty look at modern relationships as they intersect with the omnipresence of technology and mobile devices. On paper, it's about a couple navigating a rocky point of contention between them that feels very relatable: they're paying more attention to their phones than to each other. But with its sharply drawn characters and slyly satirical point-of-view, it becomes a commentary on how screens have reshaped the very way we relate to one another. Visually, the film begins with a compressed frame mirroring the devices that both Zack and Sam are addicted to. The image distorts their faces, but it also morphs the film's sense of reality, feeling claustrophobic, cramped and even surreal. As Zack and Sam argue, the framing underscores a fundamental distortion in their relationship and very selves: they're not particularly pleasant people. But with a perspective warped by their screentime, they barely seem to notice that unpleasantness, especially in themselves. When they experiment with a tech fast for the day, the screen image widens, and the storytelling opens up some space for the couple to explore one another. In a darkly funny way, they seem uncomfortable when fully present and don't communicate any better. Actors Anthony Notarile and Erika Chase have tricky roles to play, as a couple that seem disconnected and individuals too absorbed in their concerns to know themselves, much less one another. Both performers aren't afraid to be abrasive, which works well in the film's final section, when they realize they can't quite connect but don't want to break up. (They look so good together in photos, after all.) Then they fall upon a solution that keeps them together, which also allows THE SABBATH to unfurl into the smart, satirical edge it's been harboring all along. Its final sequence is, on paper, a happy ending. But it's also funny, incisive and caustic, an envisioning of just how far and deep our screen addictions can go -- exaggerated enough to be hilarious and relatable enough to be a little scary.
